i have been itching to share photographs of my grand designs room-set all week, but i wanted to wait until all of my nearest and dearest had been to the show and witnessed the set for themselves. i’ve had some wonderful feedback and am so pleased with how everything turned out, and would love to hear your thoughts on the set, whether you are just viewing it here on the site, or if you have been to the show itself.
i have a lot of wonderful contributors who need to be thanked for making this room-set possible: the trompe l’oeil drape wallpaper is by vivienne westwood for cole and son, the ‘rubbish’ rug is by vivienne westwood for the rug company and the walls are painted in ‘adoration grey’ by valtti paint.
the dressing table, gold floor length mirror and bankers table lamp on the sewing table are all from laura ashley; the beautiful elizabeth love seat is from bhs; the tartan ‘mcqueen’ and blue velvet ‘spank’ chairs are by aiveen daly; the beautiful bespoke lampshades are by beauvamp; the wire mannequins are by the orchard (displaying dresses on loan from vivienne westwood), ‘british made’ cushions by barbara coupe, tan leather trunk by ginger rose, floral storage tins by garden boutique, and selection of crystal perfume bottles by lavender room, all available through notonthehighstreet.com; the tabletop victorian mannequin, pineapple sconces, birdcage mirror, black wall mirror and military stag wall-hooks are from caravan; the vintage bakelite telephone, vintage gramophone, wooden shoe lasts, alarm clock, enormous stag cushions and hat & pigeon cushions are all from pedlars; the dark leather laundry basket, tan leather umbrella stand and hat boxes are from the holding company.
all of the vintage dresses, shoes and bags have been provided by beyond retro, and all of the fabrics used in the textiles area are from lucy loves fabric.
and, as a wonderful extra offer for you, my dear readers, the lovely lucy of lucy loves fabric is offering 15% off any order from her shop. just enter the promo code “fabric” at the checkout.

hi Kate, i went to the exhibition and had the pleasure of looking at your set in person. It’s truly beautiful and I love everything about it. Good work! :)
Outstanding! Wish I could have seen it in person.
It looks wonderful! I love the layers that you’ve built up: it really does look lived in and makes me feel nostagic as it reminds me of the homes of old relatives – especially seeing that sewing machine as my grandmother had one just like that!
I know I’ve already said so, but it really is great – really enjoyed seeing it!
Wow! Your photo’s look WAY better than mine ;-))
The set really was wonderful, so ‘real’ – I could have moved in tomorrow.
It’s a pleasure offering your readers the discount, lets hope they take advantage!
Have a lovely weekend Kate,
Lucy x
Great job! I love this!
Oh Kate, love, this is sumptuous and splendid and simply divine. What an absolutely stunning room-set — my favourite touch was the vintage Singer sewing machine, just like my Gran’s! You are an outstanding talent, and you should be so bloody proud of yourself for this incredible achievement. Well done you!

Well done! I love that way the sets just overflowing with gorgeous things, like a whirlwind of creativity just passed through.
This looks fabulous, Kate!
I love the feeling of someone’s actual room — records on the floor, fabric falling out of the baskets, coffee mug on top of the old issues of Vogue — messy and lived-in.
Congratulations!
I visited your room-set at the Excel Grand Designs show yesterday (Sunday) … absolutely glorious … loved it, loved it, loved it!!
I just ran across your wonderful post today. It was very helpful for me and it’s filled with information. keep smiling and take care!
