Fabric of my Life.

A place of light

another jozi neighbourhood jostling for the crown of hippest city quarter is the maboneng precinct, a cultural hub known for its mix of galleries, artist studios, creative venues, offices and retail spaces that has grown out of the development of arts on main.

housed in an early 1900s bonded warehouse, arts on main is a unique creative venue that allows johannesburg’s creative community to develop and share ideas, offering multiple creative experiences in one venue. we rocked up on a sunday lunchtime to find the market on main in full swing, proffering gauteng-based food and design stalls serving up all manners of tasty delights.

we’d cleverly booked ahead and arranged table at the ultra-trendy canteen, nestled between the olive trees and art galleries, and i immediately fell in love with the décor: concrete walls softened by mismatched wooden furniture and traditional african textiles, with vintage drum magazine covers adorning the walls.

satiated after a delicious burger and fat fries (washed down with hunter’s dry cider) we ambled around the market stalls, eyeing up all the vintage fashions and creative art pieces on offer. i fell in love with the jozi range by papercake at the ace african contemporary emporium, but mindful of my bulging suitcase sensible opted for a single dessert plate to take away as a memento of my fabulous trip.

lured outside by the amazing city views from the top of arts on main, we wondered along fox street to main street life, home of the bioscope independent cinema; an innovative cinematic project that aims to increase the diversity of content on south african cinema screens. the venue is currently hosting the home movie factory, a truly unique and interactive exhibition set up by legendary filmmaker michel gondry to encourage and cultivate filmic creativity amongst the general public. the factory has already travelled around the world, first installed in new york, then são paulo, rio de janeiro, paris and rotterdam.

alongside the bioscope, we discovered a wealth of quirky cafés and bars, from the eat your heart out urban deli to the hip chalkboard collaboration café, and the living room restuarant atop the main change, which boasted another magnificent view of the city juxtaposed by the host of greenery blossoming in every corner of the space. bathed in the glorious sunshine of another plus 30° day, this urban oasis truly felt like a little slice of heaven. seriously guys, if you ever find yourself in joburg over a weekend, this is the place to be!
